CoSIDA Internship Grant deadline approaching
The deadline for the 2009-10 CoSIDA Graduate Internship
Grant application is April 13. The $10,000 grant is
awarded to an institution for the purpose of hiring a 10-month
intern position. The grant will be paid in two $5,000 installments,
with the first sent approximately September 15 and the second in
January. Payment will be made directly to the individual hired by
the SID office awarded grant assistance.
CoSIDA Internship Grants are available only to sports information
offices without paid graduate or undergraduate interns.
Applications must be complete and thorough to be considered. Please
see the application for complete rules and guidelines.
“Again, I’m so grateful CoSIDA chose Grand Canyon
University to receive this additional help. It is my hope that this
move will lead to a full-time assistant with our burgeoning
athletic program here at GCU.”
- Jim McCurdy, Grand Canyon
University (2008-09 winner)
“The grant has made a tremendous difference in my life as
well. I’ve been able to hand off more and more
responsibilities to Eric as the year has progressed and
we’ve accomplished far more in the office than I was
able to do by myself. I find that I still work far too many
hours—such is the nature of sports information—but my
stress level has diminished. At hectic times, such as fall
Saturdays after football games, it is so nice to be able to hand a
pressing task off to Eric while I put out other fires. I’m
fortunate in that my boss in Marketing/Media Relations and our
athletic director recognize the need for a graduate sports
information intern position at Central. Others in the
administration were not convinced, but the grant has done exactly
as intended in that regard. They are seeing the benefits of the
position, not only in what it’s allowed us to accomplish but
in staving off burn-out in the SID. As a liberal arts college,
Central is a strong proponent of whole-person development and
it’s becoming clear that this intern position is making a big
difference to me in that regard.”
- Larry Happel, Central
College (2007-08 winner)
“As for the internship at Bellarmine, per the CoSIDA
internship grant, it was a huge help in furthering my career. I
know at the time that Bellarmine would not have had the money to
bring me aboard and they needed another SID or Nels was going to go
crazy. I think my experience there was very instrumental in
developing my skills and knowledge because of all the
responsibility I was given. There were 19 sports and had to quickly
learn how things went because I was in charge of nearly half of
them. From building relationships with the coaching staffs and the
media, to understanding when the correct time to pitch a story was.
It also helped me develop managerial skills over student workers
and volunteers. I also obviously continued to develop my ability in
writing press releases, recaps, season reviews, interviews, and I
learned how to effectively put together media guides.”
- Wes Liles, Bellarmine
University intern (2006-07)
The application is available on the CoSIDA website at http://www.cosida.com/documents/2009/3/24/CoSIDA_Apps_09-Grad%20Internships.pdf.
